A housewife has been shot dead in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila after being caught in indiscriminate firing during a clash between rival BNP factions, police say.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon at Satpara village, said Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police Sujan Chandra Sarkar.

The victim was identified as 35-year-old Ferdousi Akter, wife of Rayes Ali.

According to police and witnesses, tension had been running high between two groups of the BNP over establishing dominance in the area.

On Thursday morning, a clash between the factions left one dead and several others injured.

In retaliation, members of one side opened random gunfire on Friday afternoon to “assert dominance”.

Ferdousi was hit and died on the spot. The armed men retreated after facing resistance from locals.

“Police are working to uncover the details of the incident. The situation is currently under control, with law enforcers deployed at the scene,” Sujan said.

In Thursday's clash, an elderly man named Idan Mia was killed and at least five others were injured.

Meanwhile, Jamuna TV staff reporter Ayub Khan came under attack at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital while gathering news on Thursday’s violence.

As of 5pm Friday, no case had been filed over the killing or the assault on the journalist.
