Dhaka Range's Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md Rezaul Karim has vowed to take action against the perpetrators of violence in Faridpur’s Bhanga during Monday's protests over the redrawing of parliamentary constituencies.
Speaking to reporters outside the Bhanga Police Station complex, which also came under attack, at 12pm on Tuesday, Rezaul said discussions had been held on maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety in the aftermath of the unrest.
“I have spoken to the deputy commissioner of Faridpur and with those in charge of security during today’s incident,” he said.
“I have instructed them in this regard. They will take the necessary steps. I will definitely bring those who are fascists under the law. I have directed my authorities to arrest them.”
Rezaul said four to five policemen were injured during the demonstration and legal measures would be taken against those who damaged government property.
The safety of ordinary people, he added, was also a matter of concern.
He further noted that responsibility for the damage caused to the Bhanga Police Station had been assigned to the district police, while losses at the Upazila Parishad would fall under the jurisdiction of the deputy commissioner.
Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Kamrul Hasan Molla said his office had been in touch with the Election Commission and submitted a report reflecting the “emotions and feelings of the people,” which the commission would consider.
“I request the people of Bhanga to step back from your programmes and wait for the right time,” he said.
“We understand the emotions and feelings of the people. We are working on that issue.”
Molla added that those involved in Monday’s incident would face legal action.
“I will tell the people of Bhanga, you have a good reputation,” he said.
“Since there will be a hearing on a writ petition [addressing the matter] on the 21st [of September], I will request you to ensure that the people do not suffer.”
