The ruling Awami League will not hold a pre-scheduled mourning procession as an indefinite nationwide curfew has been imposed following a wave of deadly violence surrounding a student-led street demonstration demanding the government's resignation.

The rally was scheduled for Monday, but the curfew announcement from Sunday evening came.

The party’s Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan confirmed the cancellation of the mourning in a notice on Sunday.

The notice read, “The pre-scheduled mourning procession of Awami League for Monday will not be held due to curfew. In addition, the birth anniversary event of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's eldest son, Sheikh Kamal, has also been suspended.”

The protesters called for a total non-cooperation movement on Sunday to push for a one-point demand for the government’s resignation after tension erupted surrounding the violence and deaths in the quota reform protests.

BNP and its like-minded political allies supported the protest programme held across the country on Sunday though it was called by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The students were joined by their parents and guardians in the protest in parts of the country.

The ruling Awami League was on the field to tackle the antigovernment movement. Police tried to maintain law and order and prevent violence.

Police and the Awami League got involved in clashes and violence with the protesters in Dhaka and many parts of the country. More than 90 people died and hundreds of others were injured in the violence.

The protesters have moved up its ‘Long March to Dhaka’ programme to Monday despite the announcement of the nationwide curfew. However, the army urged everyone to maintain the law during the curfew.
