A Secondary School Certificate (SSC) candidate has died after being hit by a Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) truck in Dhaka’s Uttara.

The incident occurred around 1:15pm on Sunday in front of the BNS Centre while the student was crossing the road. The victim was identified by a single name as Nayeem, 16.

According to Shamim Ahmed, chief of Uttara East Police Station, the airport-bound truck hit the student, after which his classmates rushed him to the nearby Women’s Hospital.

He was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 3:15pm, where doctors declared him dead.

Nayeem was from Haluaghat Upazila in Mymensingh. He lived with his family in Uttara’s Pakuria, and appeared for the SSC exams from Uttara High School and College. His exam centre was Uttara RAJUK School.

According to Shamim, the truck involved in the accident has been seized. However, the driver is currently on the run.

Inspector Faruk, chief of the DMCH Police Outpost, said that Nayeem’s body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
