A pedestrian has died after being hit by a bearing pad that fell from the Dhaka Metro Rail line in Farmgate.
The incident occurred around 12:30pm on Sunday, prompting authorities to suspend metro operations.
Confirming the incident, Faruque Ahmed, managing director of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), which operates the metro rail, said: “A bearing from the joint between the metro line’s viaduct and pillar came loose and fell. I’ve heard one person died on the spot.
"Metro train service has been temporarily suspended. I’m on my way to the scene and will be able to share more details after ab inspection.”
Mobarak Hossain, chief of Tejgaon Police Station, said the victim was walking along the footpath in front of the Krishibid Institution beneath the Farmgate Metro Station when the pad fell from above.
Police later identified the victim as Abul Kalam, a native of Shariatpur.
Bearing pads are made of a special kind of rubber and are used at the connecting points of pillars and viaducts to absorb vibration and maintain stability in elevated rail structures.
Witnesses said a tea stall on the footpath was also damaged by the falling object.
Describing the incident, witness Atiqur Rahman, said: “We were inside the Krishibid Institution when there was a loud blast. The whole building shook. At first, we thought a tyre had burst. Then we saw a man lying on the road. A heavy black object had hit his head. One side of his head was crushed. He died on the spot.”
Sub-Inspector Nazrul Islam of Tejgaon Police said the metro station authorities had been informed about the incident.
"Metro rail service is currently suspended. The body has been recovered and legal action is under way," he added.
Earlier, on Sept 18 last year, one of four springs in the viaduct from Dhaka’s Farmgate to Bijoy Sarani had separated, sparking safety concerns.
