Locals and parents have surrounded a madrasa and a local police station after three boys were allegedly raped at the educational institution in Meherpur’s Mujibnagar.

The incident occurred at Mujibnagar Ideal Madrasa and Darul Hifzkhana Boarding in Kedar Ganj Bazar, Mujibnagar on Thursday.

Chief of Mujibnagar Police Station, Zahidul Islam, said that the founder of the madrasa is Maulana Tahaj Uddin, a member of parliament from the Meherpur-1 constituency and the district Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The parent of one of the victims filed a rape case against a teacher at the police station.

Later, the accused teacher was arrested and sent to court, and the victims were rescued from the madrasa.

The arrested Nur Uddin is an Arabic teacher at the madrasa. He is the son of Abdul Majid from Tengachhara village in Purbadhala Upazila of Netrokona.

Locals said that children from different districts live and study at this boarding madrasa. When news spread on Thursday night that three children had been raped, agitated locals surrounded the madrasa.

However, as the madrasa is owned by a Jamaat leader, party activists came forward to protect it, which agitated the locals further.

Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. Later, the agitated crowd surrounded Mujibnagar Police Station demanding justice and the arrest of the accused teacher.

The father of one of the victims, who filed the case, said his son studies in the fifth grade Hifz section of the madrasa. After hearing about the incident from another parent, he went to the madrasa around 3am and rescued his 10-year-old son.

The child told his family that the Arabic teacher, Nur Uddin, used to take him and two other students to a room late at night and “do bad things” to them regularly. Even on the day of the incident, the teacher allegedly “abused him three to four times,” he said.

Local residents Shariful Islam and Majedur Rahman said they were returning home from Mujibnagar Bazar when they saw people rushing towards the madrasa. They heard that children were being abused there and called for help from locals to save them.

Hearing their plea, hundreds of people gathered and surrounded the madrasa. At that time, Jamaat activists tried to rescue the teacher and protect the madrasa, which led to a tense standoff.

Eventually, facing public anger and the police presence, the Jamaat activists backtracked.

Police then entered the madrasa, detained the teacher, and rescued the children. Later, locals surrounded Mujibnagar Police Station demanding justice.

Some locals said they had heard similar allegations before but had not believed them.

bdnews24.com has been unable to get a statement from Jamaat leaders regarding the incident.

OC Zahidul said, “A parent has filed a rape case over an incident that occurred at the madrasa owned by the (local) Jamaat Ameer. The accused teacher used to regularly call students at night and rape them.”

He added that the teacher has been arrested and sent to jail through the court.

The victims have also been presented before a magistrate, and their statements were recorded under Section 22, the OC said.
