Chattogram police have recovered the body of a woman with her throat slit and her husband hanging from the ceiling in a house.

They were found on Tuesday night at a residence near Diamond Cement Factory in Karnaphuli Upazila.

The couple had come to stay at the house, rented by the husband’s aunt, about two weeks ago.

The woman was identified as Reshma Akter, 18, whose body has been taken to the morgue for post-mortem examination.

Her husband Md Ibrahim, 29, has been admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital under police supervision.

Karnaphuli Police Station chief (OC) Muhammad Sharif said the house belonged to Ibrahim’s aunt and that both she and her husband were away at work during the day.

"In the afternoon, when the aunt and uncle returned from work, they found the house door locked. After knocking and receiving no response, the aunt climbed upstairs through a gap in the floor and saw Ibrahim hanging from the ceiling," he added.

According to police, with help from neighbours, Sabuz Mia, Ibrahim’s uncle, entered the house and found Reshma lying in another room, covered in blood, while their 8-month-old daughter was sitting nearby.

OC Sharif said Ibrahim was rescued while still alive and taken to hospital.
