Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has warned that certain quarters are hiding their identities to “fish in troubled waters” amid the student demonstrations demanding the education minister's resignation.

The government remains prepared to deal with the situation regardless of who may be behind the movement, he said at the Secretariat on Thursday.

A ceremony scheduled for that day to honour police for bravery and commendable work was cancelled, a decision the minister said he regretted.

Asked whether anyone was orchestrating the student protests, including banned organisations or other groups providing backing, Salahuddin said: "Whoever is behind it, we're the ones standing in front."
