Four men have been accused of “raping” a woman who was on her way back home after visiting her husband at the central jail in Dhaka’s Keraniganj. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the case.
The arrests were made late on Thursday night in the Teghoria area of South Keraniganj, following a complaint filed by the woman the day after the incident, confirmed Keraniganj Police Station chief Mazharul Islam.
The two men arrested are Sumon, alias Bablu, 28, from Teghoria, and Nur Islam, 32, from Ikuria.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening.
After meeting her husband at Dhaka Central Jail, the woman boarded an autorickshaw around 8pm to return home. Along the way, three other male passengers got into the vehicle.
“The driver took the autorickshaw to a secluded area in Teghoria, South Keraniganj, under false pretences,” Mazharul said. “There, the three men raped her throughout the night and fled at dawn.”
After the woman lodged a written complaint, police visited the scene and began their investigation. A special operation led to the arrest of two suspects, while efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining two.
The two arrested men will be presented in court on Friday with a request for remand, the police officer added.
The woman has been sent to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
