Although the first funeral prayer for Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman Hadi was scheduled to held in Singapore, the Bangladesh High Commission has said the service will not go ahead there.
In a post on Facebook on Friday, the mission said the service had to be cancelled as the required clearance had not been received from the relevant authorities.
It expressed regret over the situation and urged members of the Bangladeshi community in Singapore to respect local laws.
Hadi had risen to prominence during the July Uprising and a movement calling for the banning of the Awami League. He had also announced plans to contest the upcoming parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
Hadi was shot at close range on Dec 12 while campaigning in Dhaka's Bijoynagar area. Police said assailants arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire and fled the scene, leaving Hadi critically injured.
He was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on Dec 15 for advanced medical treatment, but died there on Thursday.
Inqilab Moncho said Hadi’s body would be flown back to Bangladesh on a commercial Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, scheduled to arrive on Friday evening. The platform also shared a photograph on social media showing his coffin draped in the national flag.
Special prayers were offered for Hadi after Friday prayers at mosques and religious institutions across Bangladesh.
His funeral prayer is scheduled to be held after Zuhr prayers on Saturday at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka.
The government has declared Saturday as a day of state mourning to mark his death.
