The Airport Armed Police (AAP) has arrested the chief of the Oggan Party – a gang known for robbing people after rendering them unconscious – and seized 55 mobile phones and a large amount of stolen goods in his possession during an operation at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The arrestee has been identified as Tajul Islam, 48.
An AAP press release on Sunday said that a victim named Arafat Hossain, 18, came to the Dhaka airport on Saturday to bid farewell to his cousin.
While Arafat was in the departure area after saying his goodbyes, the accused Tajul offered to make Arafat drink coffee. Arafat fainted after drinking the coffee.
Later, AAP members arrested Tajul and searched his body and bag, recovering two mobile phones and some cash belonging to the victim, Arafat. In addition, about 15 pieces of anaesthetic tablets were found in the bag.
AAP says that during interrogation Tajul, said he and his gang would go to bus or railway stations and talk to their targets. Later, they would render them unconscious by mixing anaesthetic drugs with tea, coffee or soft drinks and steal their goods.
To fend off suspicion, they sometimes pretended to be physically disabled or sick, so that the victims would not suspect, the police said.
After interrogating the accused, AAP learned that he had formed an Oggan Party gang with four to five unnamed others and stored the stolen goods in a residential hotel room in the Darussalam area of Mirpur.
Later, based on the tip-off, a team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Fauzul Kabir Moin of AAP-13 conducted a raid at Hotel Royal in Darussalam area.
They recovered 55 mobile phones of different models, 10 different models of airbirds, 15 wristwatches, four anaesthetic tablets, two anaesthetic packs, Tk 223,000 in cash, 53.5 Saudi riyals, 1 Turkish lira and various goods.
The victim, Arafat, filed a regular case against Tajul at the Airport Police Station on Monday.
Anita Rani Sutradhar, additional superintendent of police (operations) of the AAP, said airport police are playing an active role in stopping Oggan Party groups, preventing smuggling and suppressing other crimes in the airport area.
“The airport police battalion is determined to prevent such crimes. Our efforts to block Oggan Party groups and prevent other crimes in the airport area will continue."
