A man has confessed to killing a freedom fighter and his wife in Rangpur’s Taraganj after planning to steal money from their home to repay a debt of around Tk 8,000, police say.

Rangpur Superintendent of Police Marufat Hossain shared the information during a media briefing on Friday after the suspect was arrested in the killings of freedom fighter Jogesh Chandra Roy and his wife Subarna Roy.

The arrestee, identified with the single name Morsalin, 22, is a student of Taraganj Degree College. He also worked as an assistant to a tile worker.

He was detained from his home on Thursday night.

At the briefing, Marufat said: “In primary questioning, Morsalin described how the killings occurred. Based on his information, a machete has been recovered, and efforts are under way to recover the axe used in the murders.”

Citing the initial interrogation, Marufat said: “Morsalin had a debt of about Tk 8,000. To repay that debt, he planned to rob Jogesh Chandra Roy’s house.

“According to the plan, Morsalin entered the house on Saturday night. He then hacked Subarna first and Jogesh afterwards with the axe he brought in.”

Marufat added, “After killing the two, he broke their closet’s lock with a machete. Morsalin told police he did not find any money there.”

“Then he climbed over the wall to flee the house and thew the axe into the pond as he escaped.”

Jogesh and his wife Subarna were murdered at their home on Dec 6.

The next morning, when repeated calls went unanswered, neighbour Dipak climbed a ladder to enter the house.

He found Subarna in the kitchen and Jogesh in the bedroom, and informed the locals.

The 75-year-old freedom fighter was a former head teacher of Chakla Government Primary School. With their two sons working in other districts, Jogesh and his wife, 60, lived alone at their village home.

Following the killings, their elder son Shobhen Chandra Roy filed a murder case with Taraganj Police against unidentified suspects.
