Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has begun exchanging Eid greetings with diplomats, academics and people from different walks of life at the State Guest House Jamuna.
The programme began at 10am on Saturday, according to Tarique's Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Ruman.
He said the prime minister joined the Eid prayer congregation at the National Eidgah before heading to the Jamuna for the event.
According to Ruman, Tarique first exchanged greetings with diplomats.
US Ambassador Brent Christensen, UK High Commissioner Sarah Cooke, Saudi Arabian Ambassador Abdullah Jafar H bin Abiyyah, were among the envoys and diplomats from different countries who exchanged greetings with the prime minister.
Tarique was accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman, daughter Zaima Rahman, and the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir during the greetings.
The prime minister will then greet cabinet members, lawmakers, distinguished citizens, academics, Islamic scholars, artists and writers, senior government and private-sector officials, and people from different sections of society.
After the programme at Jamuna, the prime minister is scheduled to visit the graves of his parents, former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with members of his family.
He is then scheduled to return to his residence in Gulshan.
This is Tarique’s first Eid in Bangladesh after spending more than one and a half decades in exile in the United Kingdom.
He returned to the country with his family on Dec 25 last year and took office as prime minister after the BNP’s landslide victory in the Feb 12 national election.
The prime minister had taken part in Bangladesh’s main Eid congregation at the National Eidgah in the morning.
