The announcement of a new political party, initiated by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement that led the movement to topple the government and the National Citizens’ Committee which was established later, is due on Friday.
The name of the party and who will be in the leadership will also be unveiled from Dhaka’s Manik Mia Avenue on that day, said Sarjis Alam, chief organiser of the National Citizens' Committee and the Movement coordinator, at a briefing at the committee’s office in Banglamotor on Monday evening.
He said, “The party is going to make its debut at Manik Mia Avenue adjacent to the Jatiya Sangsad at 3pm on Feb 28.
“We want to take ‘our’ oath with the Jatiya Sangsad before us which symbolises the hopes and aspirations of the country’s 180 million people.”
"The interests of the people will prevail over the interests of individuals, groups, and parties in the new party we are going to launch," he said.
The leaders and activists of all political parties alongside the families of martyrs and oppressed, local and foreign diplomats, protesters who took part in the mass uprising, students, the members of the public, expatriate workers, and religious and ethnic groups will participate in the inauguration ceremony, he added.
Citizens' Committee Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Anti-discrimination Movement Chief Organiser Abdul Hannan Masud and coordinator Arif Sohel also attended the briefing.
Several central leaders of the Citizens' Committee and the Student Movement said the new party is being formed with a large part of the current leadership of the committee.
The party will be launched through a convening committee of up to 200 people by adding at least 30 percent new faces, they said.
The number of members of the body will be gradually increased to 300. By that time, the district committees will be completed in parallel.
The Student Movement and the Citizens Committee have been forming Thana committees one after another to strengthen the party’s structure across the country.
Numerous activities are under way to finalise the party's constitution, philosophy, manifesto, and symbol.
The name of ICT Advisor Nahid Islam is already being discussed as the convenor of the new party, alongside Akhtar and Citizens' Committee Convener Nasir Uddin Patwary as member secretaries.
