Two ships have collided in the waters of Chittagong Port. A crack was later found in the engine room of one of the vessels, an oil tanker.
The incident took place around 12:25pm on Friday. The oil tanker MTC Spike is carrying 33,000 tonnes of diesel.
The Chittagong Port Authority said that the accident occurred due to strong currents.
Immediately after the incident, the Chittagong Port Authority, Bangladesh Navy, and Coast Guard launched a rescue operation.
In addition, the vessel's shipping agent Pride Shipping has been instructed to unload the fuel oil from the ship as soon as possible.
On the other hand, the Chittagong Port Authority has instructed the salvage company to repair the crack and salvage the vessel.
On Friday evening, Chittagong Port Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim told bdnews24.com: “The tanker MTC Spike, carrying about 33,000 tonnes of diesel, collided with the anchored bulk carrier MV Sunshine.
“It was initially reported that this incident occurred due to the inability to maintain control due to the strong currents. The details will be uncovered by an investigation.”
Stating that all the cargo tanks of the oil tanker were completely intact following the collision, Refayet said: “No water entered the cargo tanks and there was no oil leakage.
“However, a temporary blackout or power outage occurred as water entered the port quarter of the engine room of the MTC Spike through a crack measuring approximately one square metre.
“The ship’s VHF communication system has been kept active with the help of emergency batteries.”
He also said that 10 shackles of cables have been released from the two anchors to keep the ship stable.
The port secretary said that despite the collision between the two ships, traffic in the port channel remains normal.
"The situation is currently under complete control,” he said.
