Another child has died with measles symptoms at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), bringing the total number of such fatalities at the facility to 27.
The 9-month-old infant passed away around 11:30am on Wednesday while undergoing treatment, according to Md Mynuddin Khan, the hospital's assistant director for administration.
The child, a resident of Trishal Upazila, was admitted by relatives on May 2 after showing signs of the illness.
In a bulletin released on Thursday morning, the MMCH official noted that 94 children are currently in the measles isolation ward, including 40 new admissions in the 24 hours leading up to 8am Thursday.
One child was referred to Dhaka for advanced care during this period.
Statistics provided by the hospital indicate that 1,145 children have been admitted with measles symptoms since Mar 17.
Of these, 1,024 have been discharged, with 19 leaving the facility in the last 24 hours.
Families of young patients report growing pressure inside the isolation ward, with many children treated on floor space due to lack of beds.
A relative of an admitted child, Farida Akhter, said treatment delays are adding to suffering.
“People are laying mats on the floor as no beds are available,” she added. “Doctors do not come immediately after admission; sometimes it takes hours. If doctors were more attentive, our innocent children would recover faster.”
Dr Mynuddin admitted that the scale of the outbreak was “unexpected” but maintained that the hospital is doing its best with limited resources.
"The situation caused by measles was beyond our imagination," he said. "There are complaints from relatives due to some hardships caused by limited medicine and staff, but we are trying to provide the best possible service despite the rising number of patients."
