A commuter train has broken down in Mymensingh's Gafargaon after its engine caught fire, leaving passengers stranded.

The incident occurred around 8am on Friday when the Jariya-Jhanzail-bound Balaka Commuter from Dhaka reached the Gafargaon Railway Station, according to Sub-Inspector Golam Kibria, who heads the local railway police post.

The engine began billowing thick black smoke before railway staff, including the driver and guard, managed to bring the fire under control.

Although the fire was contained, the engine was rendered inoperable.

The breakdown blocked line No. 1 in Gafargaon station. However, services on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route were continuing normally via line No. 2.

A relief engine is being sent from Mymensingh, after which the train will resume its journey, SI Kibria added.
