A truck has run over a CNG autorickshaw and killed six people in Noakhali’s Kabirhat Upazila.

The accident occurred around 2:30pm on Tuesday near Islamia Alia Madrasa on the Kabirhat–Basurhat road, said Kabirhat Police chief Shahin Mia.

Police have yet to identify the victims.

The incident occurred around 2pm on Tuesday on the Kabirhat-Basurhat road in Purba Fatehpur near the Islamia Fazil Madrasa, said Kabirhat Police chief Shahin Mia.

The dead are Tanim Hasan, 26, a third-year Honours student of accounting at Noakhali Government College; Israt Jahan, a first-year Honours student in sociology at the same college; rickshaw driver Shah Alam Khokon, 46; passenger Sultan Ahmad Suman, 33; Bibi Kulsum; and Jannat.

Tanim was the son of Abul Kalam of Nabipur in Senbagh Upazila. Israt was the daughter of Gias Uddin of Basurhat Municipality in Companiganj Upazila.

Police, however, could not immediately identify the other two victims, including a woman.

The security force and witnesses said, at noon, an autorickshaw carrying five passengers was travelling from Maijdee town toward Basurhat. En route, the vehicle’s front axle broke, causing it to veer out of control and swerve into the opposite lane. At that moment, an oncoming truck collided with the autorickshaw, dragging it a distance.

The autorickshaw driver and three passengers died instantly.

Officer Shahin said that the two injured individuals were taken to the Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors also declared them dead.

He added that upon receiving the news, police recovered the bodies of three victims from the scene and took them to the station.

The driver and his assistant fled immediately after the incident, leaving the truck behind. It was later seized and taken to the police station.
