A burglary has been reported at the village home of Osman Hadi, an election hopeful and convener of Inqilab Moncho who was shot in Dhaka.

The incident took place late on Friday night at Hadi’s house in the Khasmahal area of Jhalakathi's Nalchhiti, according to his cousin Sirajul Islam.

He said thieves broke a window and entered the house while no one was at home, adding that it was not yet clear how much property had been stolen.

Nalchhiti Police Station chief (OC) Ariful Alam said police patrols were on duty at the time but had not received any report of the burglary. "We are looking into the matter," he added.

Earlier on Friday, Hadi was shot in the head in the capital's Bijoynagar area.

The incident occurred shortly after Hadi, who was making an independent bid for the Dhaka-8 seat, had completed a campaign event at a mosque in Motijheel and was travelling by battery-powered rickshaw with colleagues towards Suhrawardy Udyan for lunch.

According to witnesses, an assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle opened fire at the moving rickshaw, hitting Hadi in the head.

He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors carried out emergency brain surgery. He was later transferred to Evercare Hospital, where doctors described his condition as critical.

As his condition deteriorated, Hadi was briefly taken back to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s Emergency Department before being moved again to Evercare Hospital at his family’s request. He is currently being treated in the intensive care unit.

Family members began travelling to Dhaka later on Friday after receiving news of the shooting.
