Three members of a family have suffered severe burn injuries after a gas line leak triggered a powerful explosion and fire in the neighbourhood of Bhatara in Dhaka.
The incident occurred around 5am on Tuesday near Notun Bazar 100 Feet Road.
The force of the explosion caused the wall of the ground-floor room to collapse.
The victims were rescued and taken to the emergency department of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery around 5:30am. They are currently undergoing treatment there.
The injured are identied with single names: Shahin, 24, a shop employee, his wife Fahima, 21, and their eight-year-old niece, Hafsa.
According to the burn institute, two of the victims have been admitted to different wards, while one is being kept under close observation.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident physician at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, confirmed the incident to the media.
"Three people from the Bhatara area were brought to the hospital with burn injuries caused by a gas line leak. Shahin has sustained burns to 50 percent of his body and has been kept under observation. His wife Fahima has suffered burns to 45 percent of her body and has been admitted to the Female ICU. Their niece Hafsa has burns covering 40 percent of her body and has been admitted to the Female SDO ward," he said.
Md Jasim, who rescued the victims and took them to the hospital, said Shahin worked as a shop employee and lived with his family on the ground floor of the six-storey building as tenants.
"In the early hours of Tuesday, while everyone was asleep, a gas line leak suddenly caused a loud explosion, sparking a fire in the room. The wall of the room also collapsed. After receiving the news, we quickly rescued them and brought them to the Burn Institute," he said.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Shahin said: "We were all asleep. In the early morning, I suddenly woke up and found us in this condition. My wife, my niece and I were all burned in the accident."
