A Dhaka court has sentenced a man named Dulal Hossain, also known as Dulu, to death for burning his wife to death over a dowry demand in Dhaka's Keraniganj 10 years ago.
Judge Munsi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Sunday.
Public Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam (George) said that, in addition to the death sentence, the accused was fined Tk 200,000.
“The Dhaka district magistrate or collector has been directed to recover the fine by selling the accused’s movable and immovable property and hand the money over to the victim’s family.”
However, the court acquitted the other four suspects after finding that their involvement in the crime had not been proven.
They are Dulal’s brother Harun, sister-in-law Morshena, sister Sumaiya and brother-in-law Raju.
According to the case statement, Dulal married Sharmin in 2001. They had a daughter.
The prosecution alleged that Dulal had been beating Sharmin since they married while demanding Tk 200,000 in dowry. Around 9:30am on Sept 17, 2016, he beat her again. At one point, he poured kerosene over her body and set her on fire.
Hearing Sharmin’s screams, neighbours rescued her. She was first taken to Mitford Hospital and later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
When informed, Sharmin’s mother, Ms Momela, went to the hospital and found her daughter in critical condition. She was informed that 85 percent of Sharmin’s body had been burnt. Sharmin died while undergoing treatment on Sept 30.
Momela subsequently filed a case at Keraniganj Model Police Station. Dulal’s mother, Zarina, and five others were named as suspects.
After completing the investigation, Sub-Inspector AKM Saiduzzaman of Keraniganj Model Police Station submitted a charge sheet against six people on Jan 31, 2017.
The Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal then framed charges against the accused and ordered the case to trial.
During the trial, the court heard testimony from nine witnesses. Dulal’s mother, Zarina Begum, died while the proceedings were under way.
After hearing the statements of the prosecution and defence, the court on Sunday found Dulal guilty.
