The body of Alimuzzaman Saju, who was killed in a fire at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata's New Market area, has been brought back to Bangladesh.
A refrigerated vehicle carrying his remains entered Bangladesh through the Bhomra Land Port around 12:15pm on Saturday, said Sajib Bala, chief of the port.
Saju was the son of Yunus Ali Sardar of Bareya village in Kaliganj Upazila's Tarali Union. He was also a maternal cousin of Tajkin Ahmed Chishti, a Satkhira district BNP leader and former mayor of Satkhira municipality.
Saju resided in the Palashpol area of Satkhira town, near the Settlement Office.
His maternal cousin Tahmid Shahed Chayan said Saju had travelled to India’s Bengaluru for medical treatment. After completing his treatment, he stayed at the hotel in Kolkata while returning home.
Saju's brother Mahmuduzzaman Dipu said preparations had been made for his burial at their ancestral village home in Satkhira’s Kaliganj.
According to Indian media reports, a fire broke out around 2am on Aug 18 on the second floor of Hotel Shikha Inn in a building on Mirza Ghalib Street near Kolkata's New Market. The fire later spread to nearby buildings.
Nine people died due to the fire, several of them Bangladeshis.
The Bangladeshi victims include Saju; Reboti Sarkar of Tentulia village in Kaliganj; journalist Debashish Dutta, 40, of Aruapara in Kushtia town; his wife Afsana Shimmin, 25; their 3-year-old son Swarnashish Dutta; Afsana's father Md Akram Ali, 64; and Ahmed Babu, 37, of Begunbari in Savar’s Aminbazar.
Meanwhile, relatives have asked that arrangements be made for the cremation of another Satkhira victim, Reboti Sarkar, in India.
