Bangladesh renews pledge to halve road deaths, injuries by 2030 at UN

Minister Rabiul Alam is leading the delegation at a two-day meeting in New York

Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to cut road deaths and injuries by half by 2030.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam renewed the pledge at a high-level meeting on road safety at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday.

The minister said the country is implementing legal, policy and technology-driven measures in line with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.

According to him, the government is expanding artificial intelligence (AI)-based speed enforcement, strengthening post-crash emergency response and introducing targeted safety measures on highways, particularly to protect pedestrians.

Rabiul also told the meeting that the government is committed to enacting a comprehensive road safety law by next year.

Describing road safety as a political priority, he said “strong political commitment, effective partnerships and collective responsibility are essential to achieving the 2030 target”.

The minister is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the two-day meeting at the UN headquarters.

Other members include Road Transport Secretary Mohammed Ziaul Haque, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury and Bangladesh Road Safety Project Director Md Shabbir Hasan Khan.
