A Dhaka court has placed a food delivery worker on five days’ remand in connection with the assault on Prof Mohammad Asadur Rahman, head of the ENT department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat passed the order on Tuesday against Jibon alias Adil, prosecution department Sub-Inspector Rokonuzzaman said.
Asadur was attacked in Dhaka's Shantinagar around 10pm on Aug 17.
Jibon was arrested at the scene and sent to jail the following day.
On Aug 19, Paltan Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Atikuzzaman, also the investigating officer in the case, sought a 10-day remand for Jibon.
The court fixed Tuesday for a hearing in the presence of the suspect.
Jibon was brought before the court on Tuesday. Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favour of the remand.
No lawyer appeared for Jibon. When the court asked whether he had anything to say, he told the judge he had gone to see a doctor when the incident occurred.
"I work in food delivery. My phone is missing, and I cannot work," Jibon said.
He also told the court that his head had been injured.
"Who injured you?" the judge asked.
"Some guards there. I don't know their names," Jibon replied.
The court subsequently ordered his five-day remand.
Another suspect in the case, Farhan Shahriar Evan, was placed on a five-day remand last Saturday.
Asadur, 55, was attacked around 11pm after leaving his chamber at Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar and getting into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.
He suffered injuries to his head, face and eyes and was taken to DMCH, where he is receiving treatment.
The doctor said he had received a demand for extortion from an unknown number 11 days before the attack.
He was also given a deadline to pay. The attack took place two days after the deadline expired.
Bystanders detained one person at the scene during the assault.
Asadur filed the case on Aug 18.
