A man has been killed in a clash between two factions of the Chhatra Dal, the BNP’s student wing, in Chattogram’s Mirsharai Upazila.

Police and witnesses said the incident unfolded on Wednesday night in the Sadar area of the Baroirhat Municipality.

The victim was identified as 23-year-old Tahmid Ullah, the son of Md Alamgir.

Jorarganj Police Station chief Kazi Nazmul Haque told bdnews24.com that Tahmid was injured during the violence between the rival groups at the municipal headquarters.

He later died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment.

“Initially, we heard that the two sides were meeting at a tea shop in the municipality to resolve a previous dispute,” Nazmul said.

“Tensions sparked after a junior allegedly sat in front of a senior, triggering the clash.”

Chattogram Medical College Hospital Police Outpost Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder said Tahmid was brought to the hospital in the wee hours of Thursday and died around 1:30am while undergoing treatment.

He said the victim had injuries from sharp weapons.

Locals said both sides involved in the clash are active in Chhatra Dal politics, and the violence stemmed from an old dispute.

Meanwhile, posts circulating on Facebook have identified Tahmid as a former member of Students Against Discrimination and a joint member secretary of Nirapad Sarak Chai’s (We Want Safe Roads) Mirsharai Upazila unit.
