Police have recovered the bodies of a man, his wife and their newborn from a locked room in Savar’s Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
Investigators initially suspect the three were killed in a planned attack.
The bodies were recovered late on Friday from a room on the first floor of a four-storey building owned by Haji Hazrat Ali in Madhya Jamgora, Ashulia Police Station chief Mohammad Tariqul Islam said.
Neighbours told police the family had recently rented the room and usually kept its doors and windows closed.
They alerted police after noticing a foul smell coming from inside on Friday.
Officers broke open the lock and found the three bodies.
Tariqul said police were initially treating the deaths as suspected murder.
He cited evidence found at the scene as one of the reasons investigators were considering that possibility.
Police are working to establish the identities of the three, determine a motive and identify anyone involved, he said.
A forensic team from the Criminal Investigation Department collected evidence from the scene.
Detectives from the Dhaka North Detective Branch and officers from Ashulia Police Station have also been working on the case since Friday night.
