Horse meat seized as police hunt sellers in Sherpur

Police have seized samples of horse meat in Sherpur’s Jhenaigati after residents alerted them to allegations that a group had been slaughtering horses and selling the meat in the area.

Those allegedly involved fled before police arrived at the scene in Fulhari around 12:30am on Friday, according to Kanai Lal Chakraborty, a sub-inspector at Jhenaigati Police Station.

Kanai said local residents had been keeping watch amid allegations that horse meat had been sold in the area for some time.

They alerted police after finding meat from a slaughtered horse late on Thursday night.

Police collected around 2kg of the meat as samples along with other evidence, while residents buried the remainder.

Authorities have obtained the names of several people suspected of involvement and are working to verify their identities, Kanai said.

Investigators are also trying to establish where the meat was intended to be sold.

“We are continuing our investigation to identify those involved,” said Kanai.

Efforts to track down the suspects are continuing, he added.
