Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has issued seven directives to modernise Dhaka's traffic system and restore discipline in the transport sector.

He gave the directives at a meeting on traffic congestion at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon on Saturday, his Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin said.

The meeting decided on modernising the traffic system and bringing discipline to the capital's transport sector, Shadhin said, including introducing electronic toll collection at expressway and flyover toll plazas and developing an app to make toll collection faster and more technology-driven.

The prime minister directed the authorities to complete this work within four months and ordered coordination among different agencies to ease congestion.

Jatrabari Flyover Congestion

The meeting held detailed discussions on easing longstanding congestion around the Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover, Shadhin said.

The premier directed the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to review an existing report it had prepared earlier and determine the steps needed to ease congestion.

The BUET has been asked to submit a report with recommendations within 15 days, after reviewing the existing report.

The meeting decided the plan would be implemented in coordination with city corporations and traffic police.

Fulbaria Bus Terminal

The meeting decided to relocate Fulbaria bus terminal to Keraniganj to bring order to Dhaka's public transport system, the deputy press secretary said, with the local government ministry tasked with acquiring the land to implement the project.

Relocating the terminal would ease pressure from buses and inter-district vehicles in the capital's central areas and help ease congestion, he said.

Since building a permanent terminal is a long-term project, the meeting decided to build a temporary bus terminal on 6.1 hectares of land at the Jhilmil project within four months.

Gabtoli Bus Terminal Expansion

The meeting decided to expand the rear portion of Gabtoli bus terminal to make vehicle management more effective, Shadhin said.

The prime minister directed the road transport division, traffic police and other agencies to work together to implement this quickly.

Kitchen Market

The meeting decided to relocate the kitchen market from Karwan Bazar to Gabtoli, with authorities directed to take the steps.

Relocating the market is expected to free Karwan Bazar and its surrounding areas from congestion.

Secretariat Parking

The meeting discussed improving parking arrangements around the Secretariat to ease congestion, including exploring the possibility of setting up parking at Osmani Memorial Auditorium and identifying alternative parking sites as needed.

The initiative aims to control vehicle pressure around the Secretariat and keep traffic flowing normally on surrounding roads.

Autorickshaw Policy

The government will formulate a separate policy to regulate and bring order to autorickshaw operations on Dhaka’s roads, Shadin said.

Unauthorised Sleeper Buses

Tarique ordered action against unauthorised double-decker sleeper buses operating in the capital.
