A female student of Jahangirnagar University has allegedly been confined at a property near the campus and subjected to assault, leaving her hand burnt.

The incident took place on Tuesday around 11:30pm in Islamnagar near the campus, according to University Proctor Prof AKM Rashidul Alam.

The victim accused Tariqul Islam, 32, a 53rd batch student of the Institute of Information Technology (IIT), of involvement in the incident.

After being taken to the university’s medical centre at night, she described the details to a female teacher of her department.

Citing the victim, the teacher said: “The suspect had a personal relationship with the student, which later ended. On Tuesday, [Tariqul] came outside her hall and pressured her to go to his house, saying he wanted to speak for the last time.

“When she refused, he tried to blackmail her in different ways.”

The teacher noted that the survivor eventually went to the flat on the pretext of picking up Iftar supplies. “Upon reaching there, the suspect taped her mouth, beat her, and poured hot water over her hands.”

“During the assault, when the victim wanted to go out to buy medicine for the burn injuries, the suspect locked the room from outside. She then called the national emergency service 999, and Ashulia police went to the spot and rescued her.”

Police first took her to the university medical centre. After primary treatment, she was referred to Savar Upazila Health Complex for advanced care.

Dr Tanvir Hossain of the university medical centre said, “The student sustained a burn of three to four centimetres on her hand. Our centre does not have full facilities to treat burn injuries, so she was transferred to Savar.”

Proctor Alam said, “We have received the report as an allegation against a former student. No written complaint has reached my office yet. Since this is a personal matter, the parties involved may pursue legal action. I do not wish to comment further.”

Ashulia Police Station chief Rubel Howlader said a case has been lodged and the matter is under investigation.
