A man has been fatally stabbed by his wife during a domestic dispute allegedly triggered by his secret fifth marriage.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday in a residential area in Chattogram under the Halisahar Police Station.

The victim, 36-year-old Alauddin, identified by a single name, was attacked by his fourth wife Nur Jahan in their home in the Morjinar Mar Colony in Bashundhara Residential Area.

According to police, Nur Jahan was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

Alauddin, a native of Sonaimuri Upazila in Noakhali, worked sporadically as a rickshaw driver and a labourer at a brick kiln, said Moniruzzaman, the chief of Halisahar Police Station.

He had been married multiple times, with Nur Jahan being his fourth wife.

“Recently, he secretly married for a fifth time,” OC Moniruzzaman said.

“When Nur Jahan discovered this, it led to tensions between them. Late at night, at around 2:30am, she randomly stabbed him with a sharp weapon while he was in bed. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot.”

Upon hearing the commotion, neighbours alerted authorities, prompting police to arrive at the scene.

They later detained Nur Jahan for questioning.

Alauddin’s body was sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

His family in Noakhali has been notified, police said.
