The government has deployed members of the Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) to strengthen border security as the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) maintains a tough stance against alleged cross-border push-ins.
The information was disclosed in a Bangladesh Ansar media statement issued on Monday.
The force said, “Among the 11 border districts, Ansar and VDP/TDP members have already been deployed at the Upazila and police station levels in Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Joypurhat, Jashore, Jhenaidah, Satkhira, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Sylhet, Jamalpur and Khagrachhari.
“In response to the ongoing situation, Ansar battalion members have also been kept prepared and on alert to provide a rapid response and additional manpower when required.”
The press note said Ansar signed a memorandum of understanding with the BGB last year, under which Ansar-VDP members would assist in safeguarding border areas.
Highlighting its supporting role to the BGB, the statement said a coordinated and sustainable security system was being developed to enhance border surveillance, prevent cross-border crime and ensure the safety of local residents.
