The Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has arrested three alleged members of a gold-smuggling ring with 861.8g of gold ornaments at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport.

The arrestees have been identified as Molla, 40, Sohag, 24, and Hasan Mia, 23.

In a statement on Friday, the Airport APBn said the three were moving “suspiciously” on a footpath near the airport roundabout on Thursday night.

They tried to flee after noticing police, but were detained, the APBn said.

A search found 861.8g of gold ornaments, comprising 21 and 22-carat gold.

The seized gold is worth more than Tk 12.5 million at current market prices, according to the APBn.

During initial questioning, police learnt that the ornaments had allegedly been smuggled into Bangladesh through passengers arriving from different countries.

The APBn said the three had been involved in gold smuggling at the airport for some time.

A case was filed against them at Airport Police Station under the Special Powers Act on Friday.
