A violent clash has erupted between activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila.
Several crude bombs were detonated during the clash on Monday, leaving at least five people injured.
The incident took place at Chourangi Mor, according to Shah Alam, chief of Sadar Palong Model Police Station.
The injured include Ishak Sardar, 34, Naim Islam, 26, 19-year-old Nirab, identified by a single name, Arman Darji, 25, and Mohammad Ali, 32.
Naim was transferred to Dhaka in critical condition, while the others remain under treatment at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. All five are Chhatra Dal activists.
Officer Alam said, “The confrontation started over a motorcycle touching one individual. It escalated into a clash, during which one side detonated a grenade.”
Police and witnesses said NCP activists had organised a rally in Shariatpur demanding justice for Sharif Osman bin Hadi. When the procession reached Chourangi, a dispute over giving way to a motorcycle led to an argument with a Chhatra Dal worker.
Chhatra Dal alleges that NCP activists assaulted their member, sparking a chase and a violent clash.
Despite the presence of law enforcers at the scene, no immediate action was taken. The situation calmed after around 40 minutes, though tensions remain high.
Rashed Khan Menon, former president of Shariatpur District Chhatra Dal, said: “Some NCP members attacked our workers. One has been sent to Dhaka in critical condition.”
Former Shariatpur NCP joint coordinator Sabuj Talukdar denied the allegations, claiming the Chhatra Dal member first entered their rally and attacked them.
Officer Alam said legal action will follow if formal complaints are lodged.
