A police constable has been sent to jail in a case accusing him of abusing his wife over dowry demands in Sherpur.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Sultan Mahmud Milon of the Sherpur Sadar CR Magistrate Court passed the order after rejecting his bail petition on Thursday, according to Court Police Inspector Md Ziaur Rahman.

The accused, 29-year-old Md Sohag Mia, hails from Suryadi Madhyapara village in Sherpur Sadar Upazila. He is currently serving as a constable at the Bandarban District Police Lines.

According to the case documents, Sohag married Lucky Akter, a resident of Sherpur Sadar's Boyra Paranpur village, on Dec 15, 2019. They have two children.

The case alleges that although a substantial amount of dowry was given at the time of their marriage, Sohag began subjecting Lucky to abuse for additional dowry.

On Jun 24, Sohag allegedly assaulted Lucky and drove her out of their home after demanding Tk 500,000, according to the case.

Later, on Jun 29, Lucky filed the case against her husband at a Sherpur court under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Sohag appeared in court on Thursday seeking bail in the case.

The court, however, turned down his bail plea and ordered that he be sent to jail.

Officer Ziaur said Sohag was sent to the district jail in accordance with the court's order.
