A Dhaka court has indicted TikTok personality Abdullah Al Mamun, popularly known as Prince Mamun, clearing the way in a case alleging him of assault and attempt to murder.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque turned down Mamun’s plea for the case to be dropped and issued the order, the plaintiff’s lawyer Israt Hasan said on Tuesday.
Both the accused and the plaintiff, Laila Akhter Farhad, were present in court during the proceedings.
The court will begin hearing witness testimony on Mar 1.
Laila lodged the case with Cantonment police on Dec 12, 2023, mentioning that she met Mamun on Facebook and the two began a romantic relationship.
Mamun and Laila agreed to get married with the consent of their families. The case documents say Mamun started living at her home in Baridhara DOHS after their engagement.
The case alleges that Mamun would use several excuses to get money from Laila, often returning home late at night intoxicated and assaulting the plaintiff physically while forcing her to comply with irrational demands.
On Dec 11, 2023, Mamun and Laila returned home from a birthday party. He then planned to go out drinking in Mirpur with two others, the case dossier mentioned.
Laila tried to stop Mamun, who grew agitated and began to curse her. When asked to stop cursing, Mamun proceeded to beat her, even attempting to kill her, the case documents allege.
After the investigation, the Cantonment police submitted a chargesheet accusing Mamun on Jan 31, 2024.
The court accepted the chargesheet on Jun 3 and issued an arrest warrant against Mamun, who was in hiding.
Mamun surrendered to the court the following day and was granted bail.
