Bangladesh does not yet know under what legal status former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is currently residing in India, or whether she has been granted political asylum, according to Md Aminul Islam, chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

He made the remarks on Monday when asked by reporters whether clearance from an Indian court would be required to extradite Hasina to Bangladesh.

Aminul, however, said the government has already submitted an extradition request to New Delhi to bring Hasina back to face justice.

"The request made is a legal procedure, and the Bangladesh government has taken the necessary steps to bring her back through that process," he added.

The chief prosecutor declined to comment on a report published by The Indian Express, which claimed that extradition would require approval from an Indian court.
