Bangladesh is set to launch an Artificial Intelligence (AI) traffic management system on its busiest highway in a bid to restore order on the route.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed will officially inaugurate the system across the 250km stretch of the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway on Tuesday.
A total of 1,470 cameras have been installed along the road to monitor traffic and automatically issue fines for violations.
Highway Police officials noted that thousands of vehicles of multiple types use the country's busiest highway every day. Reckless driving leads to minor and major accidents on an almost daily basis.
The section of the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway where the AI cameras are being installed spans two Highway Police jurisdictions -- the Gazipur and the Cumilla region.
The Cumilla region covers Chattogram, Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla, Lakshmipur, and Cox's Bazar.
Meanwhile, the Gazipur zone oversees Dhaka, Gazipur, Manikganj, Tangail, Narsingdi, Narayanganj, and Munshiganj.
Under this setup, the stretch from Dhaka’s Signboard to Daudkandi falls under Gazipur while the section from Daudkandi to Chattogram falls under Cumilla.
Gazipur Police Superintendent Rahmat Ullah told bdnews24.com that six to seven people die each month in road accidents on the stretch between Dhaka's Signboard and Daudkandi.
He believes the automated fining system powered by AI cameras will significantly reduce the number of crashes.
"Most accidents occur due to speeding," he said. "With these AI cameras, a single vehicle can be fined multiple times for repeated violations."
