Police have arrested 14 people over two separate attacks linked to land disputes in Dhaka's Mohammadpur and Adabor.
Eight were arrested over an alleged attempt to seize a plot in Mohammadpur’s Chand Udyan area, while six others were held over an attack on a building in Adabor, according to police.
Assistant Police Commissioner Arifa Akhtar Priti of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division said on Monday that the eight were arrested during an operation over the alleged attempt to grab the Chand Udyan land.
Legal action is being taken against them, she said.
The incident took place around 11am on Saturday at an office on a plot next to "Rose Villa" in Chand Udyan, on the western side of the Beribadh area.
CCTV footage circulating on social media shows a group breaking the lock of the office and entering before removing various items.
Anwar Hossain Ripon, an employee of the office, filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station on Sunday, naming 10 suspects and accusing another 20 to 25 unidentified people.
Police subsequently arrested Md Limon, 23, from a house in Mohammadpur and Md Monowar Hossain Saddam, 25, from the Bashbari area.
Police said those arrested admitted to taking part in mugging and land-grabbing activities for money. Limon and Saddam had previously faced cases involving mugging and fighting, according to police.
Police said the land had been in the possession of a local man named Alam.
Around 150 to 200 people allegedly led by Johny and Rezaul went to the site on Saturday morning and tore down a tin fence surrounding the plot.
They then vandalised an office and attempted to take control of the property by erecting a new tin fence, police said.
Police later arrived and brought the situation under control.
Mohammadpur Police Station chief Abdul Halim said on Saturday that there was a dispute over ownership of the land.
He said the parties had been advised to seek a resolution through the courts, adding that whichever side secured a ruling in its favour would have the legal right to the property.
6 Held Over Adabor Attack
In a separate incident, police arrested six people over an alleged attack with sharp weapons on a building amid a land dispute in Adabor.
Adabor Police Station chief Zahidul Islam said the six were arrested during overnight raids in different parts of Dhaka on Sunday.
"Five people have already been brought to the police station, while another was arrested outside Dhaka. He is being brought to Dhaka," he said.
Police did not immediately disclose the identities of those arrested.
A group of 20 to 25 people allegedly attacked a house on Road 6 of the first project of Shyamoli Housing in Shekhertak on Saturday morning, damaging its gate, windows and CCTV cameras.
Relatives of the building owner alleged that a local man named Khorshed Alam had taken control of the property in a similar manner after Aug 5, 2024.
They said the owners regained possession of the building on Mar 12 following legal proceedings through the courts and approaches to the police. The property was attacked again a few months later.
The relatives also alleged that they did not receive immediate police assistance despite calling the national emergency service at 999 during the attack.
The incident was captured by another CCTV camera, with the footage subsequently circulating on social media.
The video initially shows a masked man talking on a mobile phone. A group of young men carrying weapons then arrive and smash three CCTV cameras before striking the windows and main gate with sharp weapons.
The victim later filed a written complaint with Adabor Police Station.
Police subsequently arrested the six over their alleged involvement in the attack.
