A child with measles-like symptoms has died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH). Another 20 children have been hospitalised over the 24-hour period.
The child died around 11:30am on Thursday. MMCH Additional Director Mohammad Mainuddin Khan said on Friday morning the child was also suffering from other health complications in addition to the disease.
Three-year-old Abdullah was admitted to the hospital on Apr 2 with measles-like symptoms. He was the son of Md Rony and Arifa Akhter, who lived in Mymensingh city’s Jamtola Mor area.
Mainuddin said 344 children with measles have been treated at the hospital since Mar 17. Of them, 262 have been released after treatment. Ten have died of the disease and another 72 are still at the hospital.
MMCH Assistant Professor Dr Golam Mowla said many children are coming to the hospital with pneumonia and diarrhea in addition to the measles. A dedicated unit has been set up on the eighth floor of the MMCH new building to handle these cases.
He added that measles is an extremely contagious disease that spreads through sneezes, coughs, and direct contact, urging people to be aware and take the necessary precautions.
