A Union Parishad (UP) member has been brutally murdered in Khulna’s Fultola Upazila.

Faruk Mollah, 48, was beaten, slashed, and had his leg tendons severed by a group of assailants.

The incident took place around 12:30pm on Wednesday in the village of Madhdanga under the Bejeradanga area.

According to Moniruzzaman Khan, the investigation officer at Fultola Police Station, several individuals attacked Faruk, leaving him severely injured before abandoning him, believing he was dead.

They also set fire to his motorcycle.

Locals rushed Faruk to Fultola Upazila Health Complex, where his condition worsened.

He was then transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment, before being shifted to Dhaka for advanced care.

He died on the way to the capital.

Police sources said Faruk had previously been associated with an “extremist” group.

He faced multiple charges across different police stations, including those in Fultola.

In April 2019, Faruk surrendered to the government under an amnesty programme, bringing 32 members of his group with him to Pabna.

He had been sentenced to 74 years in prison in connection with two murder cases but had been granted bail by the High Court.

Inspector Moniruzzaman said no case has yet been filed, but an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the murder.

The body has been sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
