Police have arrested four people for allegedly gang-raping a woman while holding a knife to the throat of her 18-month-old child in Pachagarh.
The woman started a case over the incident at Panchagarh Sadar Police Station on Saturday. Later that night, police conducted a raid and arrested four suspects from their homes.
The incident occurred on Friday night in the Sare Tin Mile area of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila, according to Abdullah Hil Zaman, chief of the local police station.
The arrestees have been identified as Jony Islam, 27, Biplob Hossain, 25, Moksedul Islam, 33, and Sadekul Islam, 28.
“Around 12:30am on Saturday, we received a call via the national emergency number 999 and rushed to the Sare Tin Mile area. We found an unconscious woman and her 18-month-old son and took them to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital,” said Zaman.
In her statement, the woman said: “My child suddenly developed diarrhoea, so I was returning to my father’s house in Jagdal from the Jemjute area of Boda Upazila late at night. After reaching Jagdal, I took an autorickshaw to Sare Tin Mile. There, a familiar autorickshaw driver who had been trailing us called out and asked me to step out of the vehicle.”
“As soon as I got out, six men grabbed my hands, face, and neck and dragged me into a nearby tea garden. I pleaded with them, but they held a knife to my baby’s throat to silence me. I was helpless.”
She continued, “I recognised four of the six attackers. Before fleeing, they sprayed something on my face. After that, I remember nothing.”
The woman's elder brother said he rushed to the hospital after being informed about her condition by the police in the wee hours of Saturday. "My sister was unconscious and bleeding. Those who committed such inhumane acts must be given exemplary punishment.”
Dr Abdul Kashem, resident medical officer at Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital, said: “Around 1:30am on Saturday, police brought in an unconscious woman. Initial tests found signs of sexual assault. She is currently in stable condition.”
The woman named four people in the case, along with two unidentified assailants, according to OC Zaman.
"Based on her information, we have so far arrested four suspects. Efforts to apprehend the others are ongoing.”
He added that the four arrestees have been sent to jail after being produced before a court.
