A knife attack in Mohakhali Wireless area has left three members of the same family with stab wounds.

The incident took place around 4:30am on Saturday.

The injured have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The victims are Sumon Mia, 45, his wife Sonia, 38, and Sonia's brother Rasel, 40 -- both identified by single names.

Sumon lives with his family in the Mohakhali T&T Colony.

Banani Police chief Farid Ahmed said, "The injured are receiving treatment, and we are trying to find out more details."

Based on preliminary information, police said an argument broke out between the three and a group of eight to 10 locals over an alleged unpaid debt.

At one point, the group allegedly assaulted and stabbed the three before fleeing the scene.

Locals later rescued the victims and took them first to a hospital nearby, and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Banani Police Sub-Inspector Md Zane Alam said, "Whether there are any other reasons behind it [apart from the unpaid debt allegations] will be known later."

He said efforts were under way to identify and arrest the attackers.
