Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has revealed that a 12‑year‑old girl in Rajshahi became pregnant and gave birth after being raped by her stepfather, not her maternal uncle as initially alleged.

In a statement on Sunday, PBI said the girl’s mother had filed a false case against her brother, accusing him of rape.

DNA tests later showed no match between the uncle and the child, it said.

Investigators then arrested the stepfather Md Mehedi Hasan alias Hridoy, 25, who confessed in court to “repeatedly raping” the girl when her mother was asleep.

DNA samples confirmed his involvement.

According to the PBI, the girl had been living at her grandfather’s house in Bagha Upazila’s Amarapur Bausa village during 2021-2022, where she became pregnant.

Following the accusation, her maternal uncle Mithun, known only by his first name, was reportedly forced to marry the girl and later went into hiding.

On Mar 3, 2023, the girl gave birth to a son.

In April 2024, her mother filed a case against Mithun, leading to his arrest.

But DNA tests cleared him of the charge.

Further investigation identified the stepfather as the perpetrator.

Legal proceedings are now under way, PBI said.
