Police have arrested the key suspect in a series of arson attacks on Hindu houses in Raozan, Chattogram.
The suspect, identified as Monir Hossain, carried out the attacks to frame individuals whom he disliked and considered his enemy, according to police.
Chattogram district police revealed the developments in a media statement on Saturday following the arrest and questioning of Monir.
He was arrested near Rangamati College Gate on Friday afternoon, the statement said.
Police have found materials in the house of the suspect identical to the banners found after the arson attacks. The banners contained names of prominent individuals and their phone numbers.
Monir told police the names in the banner represented individuals with whom he had “enmity”.
“Due to prior enmity and personal resentment, the arrested individual deliberately carried out arson attacks on people’s homes. The incidents were an attempt to destroy social harmony while framing rivals,” the police said based on what they called primary information.
Monir is an accused in four cases related to theft and drugs. He was also a convict in a theft case.
Earlier in the last week of December, police had announced a reward for information leading to the arrest of the arsonists involved in a series of attacks on Hindu houses.
One of the attacks occurred on Dec 23 at the house of Sukh Sheel, an expatriate living in Qatar. His sister and her husband lived in the house along with their family. From the scene, police seized banners containing names and mobile numbers of political personalities and government officials.
A similar arson attack was reported in the Raozan municipality on the morning of Dec 20 on the houses of Bimal Talukder and Rubel Das. The residents of the houses found themselves locked inside when they tried to run away after the houses were set on fire. White clothes were used to tie doors at the houses. Kerosene-soaked cloth was found in the courtyards of the houses, witnesses said.
On Dec 19, similar arson attacks were made on the houses of Sadhan Barua, Sona Pal and Kamini Mohon Pal in the municipality.
On Dec 26, a man named Morshedul Alam, 55, was reportedly caught red-handed as he was trying to set a van laden with clothes on fire at Gohira Bazar in Raozan.
