Three police officers, including an assistant commissioner, have been withdrawn in Mohammadpur after being found at the station during a special drive.

Police said the special drive was launched on Friday to prevent Awami League activists from staging flash processions.

The move followed a directive from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner last week, stating that officers of areas where processions would take place must face action if they failed to stop them.

On Friday afternoon, reports emerged that three officers had been withdrawn from duty.

According to officers, they had been instructed to remain on the ground between 11am and 6pm on Friday to prevent sudden processions.

Around 3:30pm, an additional commissioner of DMP visited Mohammadpur Police Station and found several officers staying inside the station instead of being on the field. They were immediately withdrawn from duty.

The officers withdrawn are Assistant Commissioner (Mohammadpur Zone) Mehedi Hasan, Inspector (Operations) Abdul Alim, and Duty Officer Masudur Rahman.

Mehedi Hasan has been attached to DMP headquarters, while the other two have been placed at the Central Reserve Office.

Commenting on the matter, DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Nazrul Islam said: “The office order mentioned that they have been closed in the interest of administration.”

“There was supposed to be a special drive in Mohammadpur between 11am and 6pm on Friday. Around 3:30pm, a high-level supervision team of DMP went there and found five vehicles parked in front of Mohammadpur Police Station. The AC (Mohammadpur) and Inspector (Operations) were busy with other tasks, though they were supposed to be on the ground.”

“The duty officer’s job was to monitor the special teams, but he failed to do so. It was sheer lack of judgment. After the matter was reported to the commissioner, they were withdrawn. Departmental action will be taken after an investigation,” he added.

One of the withdrawn officers, however, said: “I was on the ground all day. I just came to the station to have lunch, at that very moment sir walked in.”

Asked about this explanation, Nazrul said: “They cannot justify it by saying they were eating. Why should they all gather at the station to eat? Is the station a picnic spot?”
