Vandals attacked former cricketer and Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan’s family home in Magura shortly after he joined former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s online programme from New Delhi.

Several men attacked the house in Keshab Mor around 9pm Wednesday, smashing windows, setting off several blasts and setting fire to the upper section of the iron gate, according to neighbours.

Shakib, who is currently playing in the Lanka Premier League, had joined Hasina’s virtual news conference in New Delhi earlier in the evening, held on the second anniversary of the July Uprising.

Neighbour Ahsan Habib said, “Several youths arrived and smashed the windowpanes with stones. We heard several explosions one after another.

“They then poured petrol over the upper section of the iron gate and set it on fire. Locals quickly put out the flames. No members of Shakib’s family were at the house.”

He said, “The house has tight security. The youths tried to break through the gate and enter but failed. Since Aug 5, only a caretaker has been staying there. The attackers fled on foot.”

Another local resident said, “Shakib joined an online programme with former prime minister Hasina in the evening. Soon after the livestream ended, several youths arrived, set off blasts and hurled bricks and stones.”

Local police station chief Abdullah Al Mamun said officers were deployed after the attack was reported but later withdrawn.

“The incident will be investigated and legal action will follow,” he said.

Shakib was elected MP for Magura-1 in the 2024 parliamentary election.
