Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, will be staged at more than 33,000 pavilions across Bangladesh this year, according to Home Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
He disclosed the figures on Monday after a meeting at the Secretariat on security arrangements ahead of the celebrations.
Jahangir said that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that the festival is observed peacefully.
“It is a major religious event of the Hindu community. Adequate police, Ansar, RAB and Armed Forces personnel will be deployed to ensure security.”
The advisor said a newly developed app would be used to verify reports of any incidents during the festivities.
“If an incident occurs, there will be a system to ensure it is remedied immediately,” he added.
He also warned that fairs and gatherings involving narcotics would not be permitted near the puja pavilions.
“However, small shops can be set up with the permission of the puja celebration committee,” he said.
According to Jahangir, there will be 33,576 pavilions nationwide, including 255 in Dhaka city.
He noted that additional pavilions are often set up outside official lists, complicating security arrangements.
“We take security measures according to the list. It is convenient for us if the list is available in advance,” he said.
The advisor also stressed that immersion of the idols should be completed before 7pm, advising organisers to strictly follow the guideline.
