A Dhaka court has granted police four days to interrogate eight individuals following their arrest in Dhaka’s Uttarkhan over an alleged plot to overthrow the government.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque issued the order on Sunday after hearing a petition filed by the investigating officer, according to Sub-Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique of the prosecution department.
During the hearing, defence counsel argued that the suspects were simply "playing carrom" in an auto garage at the time of their apprehension.
The defendants were identified as Md Mazharul Islam alias Rayhan, Md Rakib, Md Tanvir Khan, Md Abdur Rahman, Md Sifat, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Md Ashik Miah, and Md Bokul Ahmed alias Raju.
They were arrested on Saturday night.
Uttarkhan Police Sub-Inspector Zahid Hossain later filed a case naming the eight men along with 25 to 30 unidentified individuals.
On Sunday, investigating officer Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of Uttarkhan Police produced the suspects in court, requesting a five-day remand.
According to the remand plea, members of a banned organisation had gathered inside an auto garage in Puranpara, Uttarkhan, to plan acts of sabotage intended to disrupt public peace and destabilise the government.
Uttarkhan police apprehended the eight suspects during a raid on the premises.
The application added that under initial interrogation, the suspects admitted to conspiring to overthrow the government established through the student-led mass uprising, as well as intending to breach public peace and destroy state property.
Upon detecting the presence of police, nearly 30 unidentified accomplices managed to flee the scene.
