Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has congratulated his new Bangladeshi counterpart Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka issued a statement ahead of the president's swearing-in ceremony on Friday evening.
The statement said the Pakistani president expressed confidence that Bangladesh will continue to progress and advance the welfare of its people under President Fakhrul's leadership.
According to the statement, Zardari said that Pakistan and Bangladesh have close bonds, rooted in common history, faith and cultural connections.
“He welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral relations and expressed hope that cooperation between the two countries would continue to grow in areas of mutual interest.”
Zardari also looked forward to working with Fakhrul to further strengthen Pakistan-Bangladesh relations and expand exchange and cooperation between the people of the two countries.
The High Commission conveyed Zardari's best wishes for the new president’s success in his duties and for continued peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Bangladesh.
It added that the president of Pakistan has invited Fakhrul to visit Pakistan at a mutually convenient time.
