Police have arrested another suspect in the murder of Dipu Chandra Das, who was beaten to death in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka before his body was hung from a tree and set on fire.
The newly arrested suspect, identified as Nibir Islam Anik, 20, who hailed from Mymensingh’s Trishal, reportedly helped to hang Dipu’s body from the tree on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.
Nibir, who worked at a knitting factory in Bhaluka, was arrested at Cherag Ali in Tongi on Tuesday afternoon, said Abdulla Al Mamun, an additional police superintendent.
Dipu, a man from the Hindu community, was murdered on Dec 18. The grisly murder sparked uproar on social media after a video of the burning of Dipu’s body went viral on Facebook.
Dipu’s brother Apu Chandra Das filed a case over the murder on Dec 19, accusing 150 unidentified people. Police have so far arrested 19 suspects for the murder.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, police said the youth in the white shirt seen in the video tying Dipu’s lifeless body to a rope and then pulling it up on the tree has been identified as Anik.
He went into hiding after the incident, the statement said.
Five suspects confessed to the killing, according to police.
